This combo hunt features the best fishing and hunting Argentina has to offer! You’ll have the chance to experience the high-volume wingshooting for dove that Argentina is world famous for on the same trip as fishing for the exhilarating golden dorado!

About the Species:

The eared dove is the star of Argentina’s legendary wingshooting scene. Similar in appearance to the North American mourning dove, this game bird is known for its adaptability, speed, and sheer numbers. In regions like Cordoba and Santa Fe, eared doves thrive due to a perfect combination of warm climate, abundant food sources, and minimal natural predators, resulting in populations estimated to be in the tens of millions. What makes Argentina truly unique is the non-migratory behavior of the eared dove. Unlike other game birds, these doves nest and breed year-round in the country, producing multiple broods annually. This reproductive cycle supports unmatched hunting opportunities, with consistently high-volume shooting available in every season.

Argentina is also home to one of the most aggressive and exciting freshwater game fish to catch, the golden dorado. Found in the Paraná River and its tributaries, these powerful predators are known for their explosive strikes and golden, armor-plated scales. They often act similar to tarpon when hooked, and love to jump out of the water and fight hard. Fly fishing and spinning are both popular methods to catch these fish, and what you’ll use to catch them will depend on a variety of factors, from water clarity to time of the year.

Most of the dorado fishing in this section of the river is done using bait, as the river needs to be very clear for fly fishing to be a viable method. You can expect your average golden dorado to be between 3-7 pounds, while a giant is about 10-15 pounds in these waters.

It’s also common to hook the palometa and surubí while fishing for golden dorado! The palometa, often compared to the piranha, is feisty and toothy. It’s not the biggest fish in the river at 2-6 pounds on average, but it more than makes up for it with attitude. On the flip side, the surubi—a massive, whiskered catfish—is all power and size. These river giants put up a serious fight and can weigh over 80 pounds!

The Hunting and Fishing Area and Terrain:

The hunting area here covers over 32,000 acres around the marshlands and fields surrounding the Parana River. This outfitter utilizes about 30 fields for its wing-shooting hunts. The dove fields closest to the northern end are the best high-volume fields, as they are relatively flat and open and provide ample shooting opportunities. These northern fields are closest to the huge dove roosting areas, where they estimate there are around 20 million birds at any given time.

Hunting and Fishing Seasons:

This hunt may be booked anytime in the month of April, and then anytime from August 1st through September 15th.

A Typical Day Hunting and Fishing in Santa Fe:

The following is a sample itinerary that can be modified to your preference once at the lodge, but your hunting and fishing schedule is a sample of what your trip may look like:

  • Day 1: Arrival at Santa Fe Airport. Direct transfer to the lodge (2-hour drive on average). Hunting time or lunch, depending on the schedule. Afternoon dove shooting. Return to the lodge for cocktails/dinner and sleep.
  • Day 2: Breakfast around 6:00 AM and morning dove shooting. Lunch and siesta. Afternoon fishing, then back for cocktails and dinner.
  • Day 3: Breakfast around 6:00 AM and morning dove shooting. Lunch and siesta. Afternoon fishing, then back for cocktails and dinner.
  • Day 4: Breakfast around 6:00 AM and morning dove shooting. Lunch and siesta. Afternoon fishing, then back for cocktails and dinner.
  • Day 5: Breakfast around 6:00 AM and morning dove shooting. Back for lunch, then an afternoon departure to the airport for your return flight home. If staying overnight, you’ll leave the next morning.

Because of the sheer number of doves, each session will be about three hours of shooting. Lunch is often prepared in the field with a traditional Argentinian barbecue, where hammocks will be set up to relax and enjoy the fields before you begin your fishing in the afternoon.

Fishing is most often done from a boat, so you'll have no need for waders here. Fishing here isn't exclusively fly fishing, as fishing with flies is very dependent on water quality and needs to be done when the water is as crystal clear as possible for the best success. Fishing with bait on spinning reels is another option this outfitter employs, and this is often used when the water quality begins to affect the catch rate on flies.

Shotgun Rental:

Shotgun rental is free for the entire hunt, and shells cost $20 per box.

These shotguns are available to rent. 20-gauge shotguns are used for these hunts.

  • Benneli Montefeltro
  • Bennelli M1 Black
  • Beretta Urika 391
  • Beretta A400

If you plan to bring your own shotgun, the outfitter recommends high-quality 20-gauge semi-automatics such as Beretta or Bennelli’s. Modified and improved cylinder chokes are recommended.

Getting There:

To get to your final destination at Santa Fe Airport (SFN), the best international connection is through Buenos Aires (Argentina). In Buenos Aires, you'll arrive at Ministro Pistarini International Airport in Ezeiza (EZE) and from there you'll have to change airports to Jorge Newbery Airfield (AEP) to make the flight to Santa Fe (SFN).
Since you have to change airports in Buenos Aires, make sure that you have at least 4 hours between connections. EZE and AEP are located far from each other (almost a 2 2-hour drive, depending on traffic).

You can arrive on your check-in date and start hunting that same day. Another option is to arrive a day earlier in Buenos Aires, spend the night in the city, and fly to Santa Fe (SFN) the following day.

If there are no flights available to Santa Fe (SFN) on your hunting date, you can also fly to Paraná, General Justo José de Urrquiza (PRA). Paraná is in Entre Ríos province, which is right next to Santa Fe, and is the same distance from the hunting lodge.

If Bringing Your Own Fishing Equipment:

This package includes all the fishing equipment you will need to be successful on your trip! However, we do recognize some clients may prefer to bring their own personal equipment. If you will be bringing your own rods and reels, the outfitter recommends just bringing one fly rod with these specs:

  • Rods: We recommend #6/7/8/9 fast-action rods, so big streamers with lead eyes don't bother your casting.
  • Reels: The reel has to have a good brake. The backing should be well loaded (150 yards of 20 pounds), large arbor if possible.
  • Lines: You will need tropical fly lines for saltwater. We advise you to bring one clear/sinking tip and one floating line. We will use 9 feet leaders that would finish in diameter no smaller than 20/30 Lb. resistance. Dorado flies are big streamers tied in #1/0 al #5/0 hooks. Every fly will be tied on a stainless steel knottable leader of not less than 8 inches long and 15 to 30 Lb test strength.
  • Flies: You will need an average of two dozen Dorado flies in various patterns for your trip, but we can provide you with the right fly fishing flies. It is important to have a bunch of flies with heavy lead eyes, and some medium-weight flies with bead chain eyes. Sizes should be mostly #3/0s with a few #4/0’s and a few more minor #2’s. Flies should be darker patterns and combined with black, and some very light or white patterns for white sand flats. Some of the best patterns are streamers tied with muddler heads and well-loaded.

Deposit and Payment Policy:

A 50% deposit is due to book this hunt. Full balance must be paid either by wire transfer, credit card, or check 60 days prior to arrival.

Cancellation Policy:

Deposits are non-refundable. The outfitter may allow a safari to be rescheduled once, if requested a minimum of 90 days in advance of the start of the wing shoot, at the sole discretion of the outfitter. Rescheduling a hunt for the subsequent year is subject to that year's price list. Any rescheduled safaris are subject to a $150 administration fee to be paid directly to the booking agent. If you are unable to make the trip, you may give or sell it to someone else for the same dates, and you are responsible for notifying your agent of the change. Travel insurance can be obtained to cover unexpected illnesses. A Travel Policy is strongly recommended when traveling to remote areas in foreign countries.
Exclusions: International and domestic airfare, ammunition, shotgun importation costs, last hunting day overnight lodging, birdboy and birdboy gratuities, international shipping of trophies, and insurance.
