This free-range Aoudad hunt takes place in the rugged Devil's River country of West Texas near Comstock. The hunt includes three full hunting days on an exclusive free-range property, where hunters pursue mature Aoudad across steep rocky hills, canyon country, deep draws, ledges, and elevated ridges. The broken terrain provides the cliffs, rock outcroppings, and escape cover that make this region particularly well suited to free-ranging Aoudad.

Aoudad hunting in this country is built around glassing and spot-and-stalk hunting rather than simply covering ground. Hunters can expect early mornings, long periods behind binoculars, and hiking through rocky terrain once a mature ram is located. With strong Aoudad numbers in the region, the goal is to give each hunter a realistic opportunity to pursue a mature, healthy ram on a true free-range hunt.

 

About the Aoudad

Aoudad, also known as Barbary sheep, are exceptionally well adapted to dry, rocky environments. Mature rams are heavy-bodied animals with thick, sweeping horns and the distinctive long hair or "chaps" extending down the front legs and chest. Their tan coloration allows them to blend remarkably well into the limestone and rocky hillsides common throughout West Texas.

Aoudad are particularly well suited to this rugged canyon country. They regularly use steep slopes, cliffs, broken ridges, and rocky ledges for bedding and escape cover, often occupying terrain that allows them to watch large areas below. Their eyesight and preference for open, elevated terrain can make closing the distance on a mature ram challenging.

 

The Free-Range Aoudad Hunting Area

The free-range hunting area is located near Comstock in West Texas and encompasses more than 400 acres of exclusive hunting country. The property includes a primary waterhole, and the outfitter puts feed out, so the Aoudad come from surrounding free-range properties on almost a daily basis, making this a prime spot to get an Aoudad. The outfitter has hunted this area for more than 20 years and has aquired extensive knowledge of the terrain, animal movements, and productive glassing locations.

The landscape consists of steep rocky hills, rugged canyon country, deep draws, limestone ledges, cliffs, and elevated ridges. This broken terrain creates natural bedding and escape cover for Aoudad while providing hunters with elevated glassing points from which large portions of the country can be studied.

The hunting area is approximately one hour from the lodge. Once hunters arrive, the guide will travel as close as practical to productive areas before continuing on foot. The combination of vehicle access, extensive glassing, and hiking allows hunters to cover different portions of the property while adapting to current Aoudad movements.

 

Free-Range Aoudad Hunting Methods

A typical hunting day begins early at the lodge with a continental breakfast. While the hunter prepares for the day, the guide loads the truck and organizes the necessary equipment before making the approximately one-hour drive toward the hunting area.

The goal is to reach a productive lookout before first light. Once daylight breaks, the hunter and guide begin glassing ridges, canyon walls, rocky slopes, and surrounding country for Aoudad. Once animals are located, the guide will evaluate the group and determine whether a mature ram is present before planning an approach.

Morning hunting generally continues until around 11:00 a.m., followed by a break for lunch before returning to the hunting area for the afternoon. The remainder of the day is spent glassing, hiking, and spot-and-stalking until darkness. Because of the rugged terrain and exceptional eyesight of Aoudad, patience and careful use of the landscape are important throughout the hunt.

 

About the Outfitter

The outfitter has more than two decades of experience hunting this area and focuses on providing personalized, hands-on hunts rather than a high-volume experience. Guides work closely with each hunter from arrival through the completion of the hunt, with an emphasis on mature animals, comfortable accommodations, and knowledgeable local guiding.

The operation maintains strong populations of Aoudad along with several other game species. Management practices are focused on maintaining healthy populations and good trophy quality while providing hunters with realistic opportunities in challenging hunting conditions.

 

The West Texas Hunting Lodge

Hunters stay in a comfortable 3-star main lodge with permanent electricity, cell phone service, and internet access. The lodge offers a combination of bunk-style rooms and larger master bedrooms, making it suitable for individual hunters, groups, and observers.

One side of the lodge contains two bunk rooms, each furnished with four bunk beds. These rooms share a recently refurbished bathroom with a shower, toilet, and sink. The opposite side includes two master bedrooms with king-size beds that share a separate refurbished bathroom.

Meals are included throughout the hunt. Hunters begin the day with a continental breakfast before heading to the field, break for lunch during the middle of the day, and return to the lodge in the evening for a hot dinner and time to relax before the following day's hunt.

 

Additional Hunting Opportunities

The hunting operation maintains strong numbers of several additional species, including Whitetail Deer, Axis Deer, and Blackbuck. Additional hunting opportunities may be available depending on the season, current animal availability, and trophy quality.

 

Getting to West Texas

Most hunters can travel to the ranch by personal vehicle or rental car. The nearest major airport is San Antonio International Airport.

Airport pickup and drop-off from San Antonio can be arranged for a fee. Once hunters arrive at the lodge, transportation to and from the hunting area is handled by the outfitter. The free-range Aoudad area is approximately one hour from the lodge, and the guide handles all driving throughout the hunting day.

 

Trophy Handling and Care

Following a successful harvest, the guide will cape and quarter the Aoudad and place the meat on ice. Ice is maintained while the hunter remains at the ranch.

Hunters who wish to keep the cape and head will have them placed in a freezer until departure. The guide will then load the trophy into the hunter's vehicle when they are ready to leave.

 

Taxidermy

Taxidermy is not included in the hunt. The outfitter can recommend a local taxidermist but is not affiliated with the taxidermy operation.

Hunters should make arrangements for taxidermy, trophy transportation, and shipping separately.

 

The Hunting Season

This free-range Aoudad hunt is available year-round.

 

The Best Time to Hunt

The outfitter recommends October through May as the preferred period for this hunt. The cooler months generally provide more comfortable conditions for hiking, glassing, and spending full days in the rugged West Texas terrain.

 

Recommended Firearms and Rental Rifles

The outfitter recommends a .243 Winchester or larger for this hunt. Because Aoudad are heavy-bodied animals and shots may be taken across open canyon country, a reliable rifle with a quality scope and suitable hunting ammunition is recommended.

Rental rifles are available in 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 Winchester for $100 total. Ammunition is available for $4 per round.

 

Texas Hunting License

A valid Texas hunting license ($315) is required and is not included in the package price. Hunters should ensure they have the appropriate license before beginning the hunt.

 

No-Opportunity Re-Hunt Policy

If no animal is harvested because the hunter receives no reasonable opportunity, such as weather conditions, the appropriate class of animal not being seen, or no animals being encountered, the hunter may be offered an opportunity to return for a re-hunt.

Qualifying re-hunts may begin at $595 per hunter to cover lodging and meals and is offered at the discretion of the outfitter.

 

Deposit Policy

A 50% deposit is required to reserve the hunt. The remaining balance is due directly to the outfitter 30 days before the hunt begins.

Accepted payment methods include cash, check, Zelle, and cashier's check.

 

Cancellation Policy

Deposits and final payments are non-refundable unless the cancelling hunter provides a replacement hunter.

If the outfitter is required to locate a replacement hunter, a $1,000 rebooking fee, along with any discount required to book the replacement hunter, will be deducted from the original client's deposit. Any remaining balance may then be transferred to another hunt date.

 

EXCLUSIONS: Texas hunting license, San Antonio airport transportation, rifle rental, ammunition, final-night lodging, taxidermy, trophy transportation and shipping, gratuities, alcoholic beverages, and personal expenses.
