This hunt for free-range water buffalo takes place in the La Pampa province in Argentina near the marshlands and riverbanks that these buffalo like to call home! These buffalo hunts are fast-paced, exciting, and dangerous! You’ll be staying at the outfitter's high-end 4-star lodge during your hunt and working to take home a trophy water buffalo!
About the Water Buffalo:
The water buffalo is a colossal bovid known for its stocky frame and semi-aquatic habits. These animals typically measure 8 to 9 feet in head-and-body length, with tails adding another 2 to 3 feet, and can weigh between 1,500 to over 2,500 pounds in the wild. They live in tight-knit herds of up to 30 individuals, usually comprising adult females, calves, and subadult females, while young males form separate bachelor groups around age three. Both diurnal and nocturnal, water buffalo graze on grasses and aquatic plants during cooler morning and evening periods, then wallow or remain submerged in mud or water to regulate their body temperature and deter insects.
A thriving feral population inhabits Argentina’s northeastern Corrientes province and extends into pockets of La Pampa, where these buffalo naturally congregate along riverbanks and shrinking waterholes during the dry season. Hunting is best from May through September when buffalo concentrate at permanent water sources, giving hunters a great starting point to find signs of buffalo on their hunt. You can shoot up to a 60” SCI buffalo at this price, and larger trophy upgrades are as follows:
60" to 70" SCI: additional USD $650
70" to 80" SCI: additional USD $1,150
81" to 90" SCI: additional USD $2,950
90+” SCI: additional USD $5,650
Free Range Water Buffalo Hunting Area and Terrain in Argentina:
This water buffalo hunt unfolds across a 5,486-acre free-range concession in Argentina’s La Pampa province, entirely owned and overseen by the outfitter. Adjacent to that expanse lies a 470-acre high-fence reserve, also exclusive to guests, that holds many of the outfitter’s exotic animals. The country here is mostly flat pampas with gentle knolls and scattered brush, dotted by man-made watering holes and natural river flats where buffalo often congregate. Well-worn tracks and natural funnels through the brush make it straightforward to move silently toward herds.

A Typical Day Hunting Free-Range Water Buffalo in Argentina:
Your hunt for free-range water buffalo in Argentina typically begins at first light with a hearty breakfast to fuel the day. After eating at the lodge, you and your PH will head out and begin glassing from low ridges and fields overlooking water sources as buffalo filter in for their morning drink. Water buffalo often graze on aquatic vegetation and wallow in the mud near water sources in the mornings to help keep them cool. You’ll continue glassing until you and your PH agree on a trophy. You’ll then begin your stalk, often along marsh edges and riverbanks, moving silently toward your trophy bull. Herds concentrate around shrinking water sources during the dry season from May through November, making early mornings especially productive as buffalo gather for their first drink of the day. These are massive animals can weigh over a ton and can be quite unpredictable and dangerous! This is the only hunt in Argentina where your PH will also be armed and can take action if the situation warrants it. Be ready for some heart-pounding moments in these water buffalo hunts!
By midday, the buffalo tend to bed down in shaded wallows, and you’ll return to camp for a traditional Argentine asado featuring grilled sausages, ribs, empanadas, and local wines before settling in for a short siesta. The afternoon hunting session will usually begin around 3 PM, as the goal will be to intercept the buffalo as they move between waterholes and feeding flats. If you spot a trophy bull on the move, you’ll start a stalk using natural cover and strategic vantage points to get within an effective shooting range. As dusk settles in, you’ll head back to camp and conclude the day’s hunt with a delicious meal and exchange stories about the day over the fire pit.
Other Available Animals:
This lodge is situated on two concessions, the 5,500-acre free-range area and a nearly 500-acre high fence concession. Other trophies available here include blackbuck, antelope, wild boar, red stag, and axis deer.
Water Buffalo Trophy Care and Shipping:
The outfitter will take care of the primary preparation of your trophy.
They will first remove flesh from the skull to prepare it. They then boil and clean the skull before transferring it to the broker that will handle the exportation.
If you choose to export the cape, the outfitter will also prepare and clean the cape before transferring it to the export broker.
Rental Rifle:
Rifle rental is $300 for the hunt and includes one box of ammunition. The outfitter highly recommends using the rental rifles rather than dealing with rifle importation through customs.
The outfitter has Mauser, Winchester, Sabatti, and Zastava rifles for rent.
If you do bring your own rifle, a .300 or above is recommended.
Getting There:
You’ll first fly into Buenos Aires to Ministro Pistarini Airport (EZE). From there, you will have to change airports to Aeroparque (AEP). At least 4 hours between flights are needed, due to traffic delays. Ground transportation in Buenos Aires will be organized for you to make airport transfers easy.
Once at AEP, you’ll take a flight to Santa Rosa (RSA). Right now, only 1 airline operates out of Santa Rosa Airport (RSA): Aerolineas Argentinas. Private charters from Buenos Aires to La Pampa are also available; inquire for these pricing options. Once you arrive at Santa Rosa airport, the outfitter will be there to meet you and begin the ground trip to the lodge. From the airport, it is a 1 ½ hour drive to the hunting lodge.
Deposit and Payment Policy:
A 50% deposit is due to book this hunt. Full balance must be paid either by wire transfer, credit card, or check 60 days before arrival.
Cancellation Policy:
Deposits are non-refundable. The outfitter may allow a safari to be rescheduled once, if requested a minimum of 90 days in advance of the start of the safari at the sole discretion of the outfitter. Rescheduling a hunt for the subsequent year is subject to that year's price list. Any rescheduled safaris are subject to a $150 administration fee to be paid directly to the booking agent. If you are unable to make the trip, you may give or sell it to someone else for the same dates, and you are responsible for notifying your agent of the change. Travel insurance can be obtained to cover unexpected illnesses. A Travel Policy is strongly recommended when traveling to remote areas in foreign countries.
Exclusions: International and domestic airfare, ammunition, firearm importation costs, rifle rental, laundry, water buffalo over 60” SCI trophy fee, shipment of trophies to taxidermist, taxidermy, international shipping of trophies, insurance, hunting license, gratuities
