Come join a hunt in the rugged Russian wilderness for Kuban Tur, found only in a small part of the world-renowned Caucasian mountain range. Your English-speaking outfitter will be with you the whole time and is dedicated to bagging your trophy Kuban Tur!
About Your Trophy Kuban Tur:
The Kuban Tur, also known as the West Caucasian Tur, is an animal found on only the west side of the Caucasian mountain range in Russia. These mountains are known for being some of the steepest and most dangerous in the world. The Kuban Tur use the steep slopes and rugged terrain to their advantage, as they are some of the best climbers and can use the cliff faces to escape from predators. The Kuban Tur has differently shaped horns than the two other Tur found in the Caucasian mountains. They are narrower and taller than the other species of Tur, and look similar to an ibex’s horns. You can expect your trophy Tur to have horns between 30-38 inches and be between 8-14 years old.
The Kuban Tur Hunting Area and Terrain:
The Kuban Tur is found only in a small part of the Western side of the Caucasus mountain range. This hunting area is found four hours from Mineralnye Vody, with the nearest town being Cherkessk, a two-hour drive from the concession. This outfitter has exclusive hunting access to over 32,000 acres and has been hunting this land for over 14 years. His knowledge of the land combined with the local relationships he has fostered over this time help get you the biggest rams possible! This hunt requires a good amount of stamina once you begin your stalk, as the terrain is extremely rugged and can be steep. You can expect to hike slopes, climb small boulders, and walk extensive amounts during your hunt. This outfitter recommends that you be in ‘sheep shape’ for the physical requirements of this hunt.
Kuban Tur Hunting Seasons:
The season for Kuban Tur opens on August 1st and closes on November 30th. However, the outfitter recommends that the best time for this hunt is from August 1st through October 31st. In August, the Tur have not yet had hunting pressure that year, and you have a better chance of bagging a giant! However, keep in mind that during August, the Tur are also at higher elevations to stay cooler, so expect and plan for a more demanding hunt as far as physical exertion goes.
About the Outfitter:
This outfitter has over 20 years of experience guiding hunters throughout Russia and Central Asia. He has personally guided dozens of clients to their trophies of a lifetime. The outfitter has extensive knowledge of the local region and has spent years creating close relationships with local chiefs and gamekeepers in his different hunting areas, keeping him in the loop of what areas have the biggest rams and densest populations. For this hunt, the outfitter has carefully selected the hunting areas for their probability of producing the highest quality Kuban Tur trophies.
Kuban Tur Hunt Accommodations:
This outfitter uses light cabins and tented camps for this Tur hunt. You may also set up and utilize spike camps as well during the hunt, depending on where the best animals are at the time.
In camp, the food served is traditional rustic Russian cuisine. The tents are basic but comfortable. Bathrooms are not en-suite to the tents, and internet service is not available. It is highly recommended to bring a satellite phone with you if you wish to stay in contact with those back home.
A Typical Day Hunting for Kuban Tur:
You can expect to start your day off around 5-6 AM, right at sunrise, with breakfast being served in camp. After breakfast, you’ll get ready and head out to start spotting rams. You can expect a variety of temperatures during the day due to the altitude, from 50 degrees some days to the high 70s. A variety of stalking methods can be used based on the terrain, location of the trophies, and your personal stamina. Vehicles, horses, and walking on foot are all possible options that can be used to help spot and track the Kuban Tur. Once you have found the one, you’ll begin your approach. On foot, expect a good amount of walking and climbing with your PH to get the perfect angle for your shot! The outfitter recommends using traditional wooden climbing sticks to help you keep your balance while hiking over this type of rough terrain. These sticks are the same ones used by the locals when they navigate this terrain, and can help in shifting your weight around on the loose rocky soil. Once you’re in position and within a comfortable range, it’s all on you to take the final shot and harvest your trophy!
Kuban Tur Trophy Care and Shipping:
The taxidermy and dip and pack of your trophy will be taken care of by Stolker Trophy Co. in Moscow. The field preparation of the trophies is done in camp by salting the hides and boiling the skull. From here, it takes about 10-20 days for your Tur trophy to be delivered to Stolker Trophy Co. They will be delivered by plane to Stolker Trophy Co. The client is responsible for all shipping charges of the trophies from the camp to Stolker Trophy Co, and all expenses afterward, including taxidermy, dip and pack, customs broker, and final leg ground shipping.
Rental Rifle:
The available rifle is a Remington Model 700 chambered in 300 Win Mag, topped with a Zeiss Diavari-Z 2.5-10x48 scope. Rifle rental cost is $400 for the entire hunt, and ammunition cost is $3 per round.
If you plan to bring your own rifle, the outfitter recommends rifles chambered in either 300 Win Mag or 7mm Remington Mag to hunt Kuban Tur.
Getting There:
You will first fly into Moscow and transfer to a domestic flight. If bringing your own rifle, this is where the paperwork, temporary import approval, and assistance will take place. Depending on the time of your arrival and the time of your domestic flight, you will either get directly on a plane to Mineralnye Vody or spend the night in Moscow to catch a flight the next day. Once there, you will be picked up and taken two hours west to the town of Cherkessk. If it is still early enough in the day, you will continue onto the hunting area another 2 hours west. If not, you will stay in town overnight and finish the trip in the morning.
